Practice instructions:
- Listen to the cadence (I-V-I or I-IV-V-I) to establish "home" (tonic)
- Listen to the target chord - feel if it's "close to home" or "far from home"
- Determine: stable (I), tension wanting to resolve (V), or warm (IV)?
- Pay attention to how the bass note moves up or down
Chord characteristics:
- I (Tonic): Feels like "coming home", most stable
- V (Dominant): Tension, strongly "wants to go home"
- IV (Subdominant): Warm, like just leaving home a little
- ii (Supertonic): Soft minor, prepares for V
- vi (Submediant): Slightly sad minor, "relative" of I
